Quinn Piling were contracted to construct piled foundations for the ferry terminal jetty as part of the construction of the new £55M Stena Line Port at Cairnryan, Scotland.
The project consisted of the installation of 90 No. rotary-bored cast in-situ load-bearing piles located at the main jetty, the ‘bankseat’ and the berthing ‘dolphin’. Due to the ground-water pressure the piles were drilled under polymer support fluid to a maximum depth of 55m. The piles formed were 762mm, 914mm and 1,016mm in diameter with safe working loads of up to 3,850kN. Piles were both vertical and raking (1:4 rake). Static load tests and dynamic load tests were successfully performed in order to verify the pile design and demonstrate bearing capacity.
Quinn Piling mobilised two Casagrande rotary bored piling rigs (approx. 90T each), and an extensive polymer storage and cleaning plant.
